Heat Exchangers and Oil Coolers: Ensuring Optimal Operating Temperature

Overheating is one of the biggest enemies of hydraulic systems. When oil temperature rises above critical levels, viscosity drops (the oil thins out), leading to loss of lubrication, seal damage, and rapid wear of expensive components (pumps, valves). The "Heat Exchangers" category at Hidraulika Store offers professional cooling solutions to keep your system running within the safe temperature range.

Our selection is grouped by cooling medium and construction type:

  • Air Heat Exchangers (Oil Coolers): The most common solution for mobile machinery and industrial environments where cooling water is not available. These units use a fan to force air through cooling fins, efficiently dissipating heat from the oil.

  • Plate Heat Exchangers: Compact and highly efficient water-oil coolers. Brazed plates provide a large heat transfer surface area in a small footprint. Ideal where a cooling water circuit is available and space-saving is a priority.

  • Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers: Classic, robust water coolers. They are less sensitive to dirty water and pressure spikes, and are easy to clean. Recommended for heavy industrial applications.

  • Accessories: Components necessary for controlling coolers, such as thermostats and mounting brackets.

Protect your equipment from overheating! Choose the air-cooled or water-cooled heat exchanger that suits your application and extend the life of your hydraulic system.

Heat Exchangers and Oil Coolers: Professional Cooling for Hydraulic Systems

The Critical Role of Thermal Management in Hydraulics

Energy loss in the form of heat is inevitable during the operation of hydraulic systems. If this heat is not dissipated and the oil temperature rises above a critical level (typically 60-70°C), the consequences can be drastic. The viscosity of the oil drops (it thins out), the proper lubricating film disappears, leading to rapid wear of pumps and hydromotors. Additionally, high temperatures "burn" the seals, causing leaks and malfunctions. The "Heat Exchangers" category at Hidraulika Store offers industrial-grade solutions for maintaining thermal balance, whether using air or water cooling technology.

Air Heat Exchangers: The Mobile and Universal Solution

Air heat exchangers (or oil coolers) are the most commonly used type of coolers, especially in mobile hydraulics and industrial environments where a cooling water network is not available. Their operating principle is similar to car radiators: the heated oil is passed through an aluminum radiator while a fan (available in 12V, 24V, 230V, 400V, or hydraulic drive) blows ambient air through the fins. Their advantage lies in easy installation and autonomous operation. Discover our wide range of heat exchangers to find the unit with the right capacity and voltage!

Water Heat Exchangers: Compact Efficiency

If industrial cooling water or well water is available, water heat exchangers offer unbeatable efficiency. Since water has much better thermal conductivity than air, these units can deliver the same cooling performance in a significantly smaller size. We distinguish between two main types:

Plate Heat Exchangers

Plate heat exchangers consist of thin, brazed plates (usually stainless steel). Oil and water flow alternately in the channels between the plates. This design provides a massive heat transfer surface area in an extremely small space. Ideal for machine tools, injection molding machines, and compact power units. One of the most popular items in our selection is the Heat Exchanger - Oil-Water - Plate - PL 22-30 E manufactured by the Austrian ASA Hydraulik, which comes with a mounting plate for immediate installation.

Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers

Shell and tube heat exchangers are the classic, robust industrial coolers. A bundle of thin tubes runs inside a cylindrical shell. One medium flows inside the tubes, the other around them. Although they require more space than plate types, their huge advantage is that they are less sensitive to dirty cooling water and can be mechanically disassembled, making limescale and deposits easy to clean.

How to Choose a Heat Exchanger?

Selecting the right cooler requires sizing. You need to know the heat loss generated in the system (kW), the ambient temperature, and the desired oil temperature.

  • When to choose air cooling? If it's a mobile machine or there is no cooling water on site.

  • When to choose water cooling? If the ambient air is too hot (e.g., 40°C in a factory in summer), if the cooler needs to be installed in a very compact space, or if a stable, low oil temperature must be maintained even under heavy load.

Why Order Coolers from Hidraulika Store?

In our selection, you will find products from renowned manufacturers like ASA Hydraulik, which guarantee durability and the specified cooling performance. Our experts assist with sizing: based on your system parameters, we calculate the required cooling capacity so you don't buy an undersized or oversized cooler. We also provide the necessary accessories (thermostats, brackets) for installation. Learn about our comprehensive services on the hidraulikastore.com homepage!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the ideal operating temperature for hydraulic oil? Generally, the range between 40°C and 60°C is considered ideal. Above 80°C, the life of the oil decreases drastically, and seals harden.

  • Can I mount the cooler in the return line? Yes, in fact, this is the most common and safest solution. Heat exchangers (except for special high-pressure versions) must not be connected to the pressure line because they cannot withstand the system's operating pressure. Their optimal place is in the return line, before or after the filter.

  • How should I control the fan? The most energy-efficient solution is to use a thermostat. It senses the oil temperature and only switches on the fan (or opens the water flow) when the oil reaches the set value (e.g., 50°C). This saves energy and speeds up system warm-up in winter.
